In December, Avigad, Bailey, Billey and dozens of other researchers met at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, a new research institute at Brown University, to discuss standards for reliability and reproducibility. Fast, focused, familiar and 100% free. Do you wonder how to get students to come up with good research paper topic ideas? The "authors" never even spoke with each other. But the research team led by Aniket Kittur, assistant professor in CMU's Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII), found that the crowdsourced articles compared favorably with articles written by a single author and with Simple English Wikipedia entries. This simple computation, written with math software called Maple, verifies a formula for the number of integer triangles with a given perimeter. Each person in the CMU experiments completed just a sliver of the work of preparing an article, such as preparing an outline, gathering facts or assembling facts into simple prose. The research-based Responsive Classroom program connects social and emotional learning (SEL) with academic skills, helping students to build positive relationships, manage their behavior, and take an active role in their own learning. The concept of “research” never really gelled with me – it was just a word professors in the hard sciences threw around in their laboratories; a concept that I didn't think applied to me as an English student. Wondering is where good research topics begin. Upon entering my final fall quarter at UCLA, I considered myself extremely lucky to have made it to the brink of graduation having never written a single research paper.
